Tonight @picoides_chick and I assisted wildlife biologist Elizabeth White with her Burrowing Owl project. Liz is monitoring the Florida sub-species on both rural and urban lands. In a burrow in a cattle pasture, Liz caught an adult male and put a GPS backpack on him. In this photo, she is showing Emily one of the burrows. Red-cockaded woodpecker nestlings are banded between 7-9 days old. Today I photographed my wife @picoides_chick as she banded two nestlings. Because of her hard work the last 5 1/2 years, and that of her co-workers, there are now over 25% more RCW familes at the site she monitors than when she started. Learning about conservation can be discouraging and disheartening, but success stories like these give me hope. RCW's aren't "out of the woods yet," as they say, but thanks to Florida Stewards like Emily they have a real chance. . . . #floridastewards #ornithology #keepflwild #bird #wildlifebiology #hands #biology #babybirds
My favorite photo from my "cloud phase." Clouds are such inspiring photography subjects to me. I find myself amazed at the idea of them as floating lakes above my head and I love how, when photographed in black and white, they look similar to cosmic nebula. Intellectually, they remind me of how water connects us all and that water is a kind of eternal witness to life on our planet. Perhaps some of the water in this cloud once lived within an ancient ancestor of mine or a dinosaur. We can assume that some of the same water that once gave life to humanities greatest heroes and villains will end up in clouds at some point. As we go about our lives, the H2O from Jesus's blood and the bodies of all the great religious figures in history may be sailing across the sky above our heads. This Toxophora amphitea specimen was collected as part of a long term ecology project at @archboldstation trying to better understand the importance of saw palmettos to the insect species in Florida. This humpback fly represents 1 of over 300 species found visiting the plant's flowers. In addition to helping at the bottom of the food chain, palmetto berries are a staple diet item of the Florida black bear. Saw palmetto is often seen as an unwanted plant, and it's serated petioles don't win it any points with the Florida biologists that have to hike through fields of it, but we can now aknowkledge it's important role as a foundational support for it's associated ecosystems. . . #conservation #conservationphotography #floridastewards #bugs #insect #entomology #macro #macrophoto

Part of being a conservation photographer is embracing your role as an environmental educator. I'm about 90 pages into reading "How to Raise a Wild Child" by Dr. Scott Sampson and I am loving it. Check out the paragraph that starts with "When a child asks a question and tou know the answer..." This kind of advice is intended for when leading a child on an actual nature experience, rather than a virtual experience like we provide as photographers, but it is a good challenge for us.
